Send a text for comments or topics ideas! What if going back to another diet isn’t a failure of willpower—and it isn’t self-sabotage? What if your nervous system is playing a much bigger role in your relationship with food, your body, and your desire to start over? In this episode of the Direction Not Perfection Podcast, Lindsey sits down with a Somatic Nutritional Counselor and Mentor who is pioneering the intersection of somatics, nervous system science, trauma work, and nutrition. Her work brings together pieces that are often addressed separately. You may understand nutrition but never explore what is happening in your nervous system—or you may work on trauma and somatic awareness without addressing the nutrition behaviors that are keeping you stuck. Together, we explore what happens when we look at the whole picture. 👉 In this episode, we talk about: The connection between the nervous system, food, and body healing What your food behaviors may actually be trying to communicate Why returning to another diet may not be a matter of self-sabotage Why we continue reaching for diets even when we intellectually know they don’t work The connection between dieting and trauma How the nervous system can pull us toward familiar behaviors and patterns Why knowing what to do isn’t always enough to change a behavior How stress, safety, emotions, and past experiences can influence our relationship with food What it means to work with your body instead of against it How to approach the cycle of constantly “starting over” with more curiosity and compassion Moving beyond restriction, control, and willpower toward a more sustainable relationship with food and your body 🤔If you’ve ever found yourself saying, “I know what to do. Why can’t I just do it?” this conversation may give you a completely different lens. Instead of immediately asking, “What am I doing wrong?”, we can begin asking: “What is my body trying to tell me?” That shift—from judgment to curiosity—can open the door to understanding the patterns underneath our food behaviors and creating change that feels more sustainable. 👉Because sometimes the answer isn’t another diet. 💛Sometimes the next step is learning how to listen to your body. 📌 Connect with Somatic Nutritional Counselor, Stephanie Mara: • Website: https://www.stephaniemara.com • Podcast: https://www.stephaniemara.com/podcast • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/stephaniemarafox 📌 Connect with Lindsey House: • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1 • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/houselifestyles 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work , sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Send a text for comments or topics ideas! 🤔 Vanity vs. Vitality: What’s Really Driving Your Health Choices? What if the reason you resist certain healthy habits has less to do with discipline—and more to do with the story you've attached to them ? Sometimes the behaviors we associate with health and fitness can carry a lot of emotional baggage. Maybe you grew up watching someone obsess over their weight and exercise, and you promised yourself you would never become that person. Maybe you've watched a spouse become consumed by workouts, macros, supplements, or their fitness tracker and decided that lifestyle isn't for you. So what happens when something that could actually support your health starts to feel like vanity, obsession, selfishness, or sacrifice? In this episode, we're unpacking the idea of Vanity vs. Vitality and exploring how our past experiences and subconscious stories may influence the health choices we make today. Because taking care of yourself doesn't have to be about looking a certain way. It can be about having the energy, strength, mobility, health, and confidence to fully participate in your life. 👉 In this episode, we explore: How the stories we grew up with can influence our relationship with exercise and healthy behaviors Why some women may unconsciously resist exercise because they don't want to become someone they associate with fitness obsession The difference between exercising for vanity and moving your body for vitality How our partners, parents, and past experiences can shape our beliefs about health and fitness Why healthy living doesn't have to mean spending hours in the gym or following a rigid diet The "helping vs. hindering" exercise for evaluating whether a health behavior actually fits your life Why the best workout isn't necessarily the hardest workout—it's the one that supports your life and priorities How walking, strength training, social movement, and everyday activity can all contribute to a healthy lifestyle Why the same healthy behavior can be beneficial for one person but feel like a sacrifice for another How to shift the conversation from "How will this make me look?" to "How will this help me live?" Applying the vanity vs. vitality framework to nutrition, sleep, stress management, boundaries, therapy, and other areas of health 📌 A question to journal about: Think of one healthy behavior you've been resisting. Then ask yourself: What story have I attached to this behavior? Where did that story come from? And finally: Is this behavior helping me or hindering me? What would change if you stopped viewing it through the lens of vanity and started viewing it through the lens of vitality ? Because maybe taking care of your health isn't about becoming smaller, looking younger, or finally achieving the "perfect" body. Maybe it's about having the strength to travel. The energy to keep up with your kids. The mobility to get down on the floor with your grandchildren. The health to say yes to the things you love. And the confidence to live your life fully. That's vitality. And that's a very different reason to take care of yourself. 🔗 Connect with Lindsey House • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1 • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@directionnotperfectionpodcast 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work , sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Listen to Dr. Laurie Bruce's podcast "From Both Sides of the Couch" 🤔⁉️ What happens when you become so good at taking care of everyone else that you lose touch with yourself ? For many women— especially in midlife —it can be surprisingly difficult to answer a simple question: “What do I need?” You may be the person everyone counts on. The caregiver. The problem-solver. The mom, partner, professional, friend, or daughter who always seems to know what everyone else needs. And while there is nothing wrong with caring deeply for the people in your life, it can become easy to put your own needs, desires, and identity somewhere at the bottom of the list. Eventually, you may find yourself wondering: When did I stop checking in with myself? What do I actually want? And how do I learn to trust myself again? In this episode, we explore what it means to reconnect with yourself—not by completely changing your life, but by becoming more aware and intentional within the life you already have. Dr. Laurie Bruce and I talk about why women can lose touch with themselves, the impact of caregiving and being “the one everyone depends on,” and how mindfulness can help us slow down enough to actually notice what we need. 🌟 In this episode, we explore: Why women can lose touch with themselves as their roles and responsibilities evolve How being the person everyone depends on can affect your own identity The difference between knowing what you need and simply doing what everyone else needs from you How to begin reconnecting with yourself in midlife What it means to know, love, and trust yourself again Why self-trust can become difficult—and how we begin rebuilding it How mindfulness can be much more than meditation or stress reduction Using mindfulness to become more present in the middle of a very full life Why you may not need a different life—you may simply need a different relationship with the life you're already living How to stop waiting for the next milestone, season, or accomplishment to finally feel happy Small ways to begin listening to yourself again 👉🧠 A question to take with you: If everyone else's needs were temporarily off your plate, what would you notice about your own? Send a text for comments or topics ideas! Have you ever felt like your body suddenly changed after 40? Your skin looks different. Your metabolism doesn't seem to respond the way it used to. Stress hits harder. Recovery takes longer. And the strategies that worked in your 20s and 30s don't always work anymore. In this episode of the Direction Not Perfection Podcast , Lindsey sits down with Jonathan Carp, MD , a dermatologist and lifestyle medicine physician, to explore what may be happening beneath the surface. Dr. Carp takes a practical, sustainable approach to health and focuses on the connection between skin health, nutrition, stress physiology, aging, and lifestyle . His perspective challenges us to look beyond quick fixes and become more informed participants in our own health. Together, Lindsey and Dr. Carp explore why aging can feel so different after 40—and what our skin may be able to teach us about the aging process as a whole. 👉 In This Episode, We Discuss: Why women may feel like their metabolism and skin change almost overnight after 40 What aging skin can teach us about the broader aging process The connection between skin health and overall health How nutrition and lifestyle patterns influence how we age, feel, and function The relationship between stress, nervous system overload, and the skin How chronic stress can show up physically in the body Why sustainable lifestyle changes matter more than rigid diet and wellness rules How to become more of an authority in your own health Why understanding your body can be more powerful than constantly searching for the next quick fix What dermatology and lifestyle medicine can teach us about healthy aging after 40 📌 Meet Jonathan Carp, MD : 👉https://www.wederm.com/provider/jonathan-carp-md/ Jonathan Carp, MD, is a dermatologist and lifestyle medicine physician focused on the intersection of skin health, nutrition, stress physiology, and sustainable wellness . He is also the founder of Miracle Noodle and Miracle Living . Through his clinical work and educational platform, Dr. Carp helps people understand how lifestyle patterns can influence not only how they look, but how they age, feel, and function over time . The Takeaway Your skin may be giving you clues—but the bigger conversation is about your whole body. Aging well isn't about finding the perfect routine or fighting every sign of getting older. It's about understanding how your nutrition, movement, stress, recovery, and daily habits influence your health over time—and using that information to make sustainable choices. You don't need to be perfect. You need to understand your body, take ownership of your health, and keep moving in the right direction. Send a text for comments or topics ideas! "You matter. Your health matters. Not just for you, but for everyone who loves you." And I think we need to talk about that. Because we often think about our health as a personal responsibility. I want to lose weight. I want more energy. I want to feel better in my body. I want to get stronger. I want to live longer. And yes—all of those things matter. But there is another side to the conversation. When you invest in your physical, mental, and emotional health, you're also investing in the people who love you. You're giving yourself a better chance of staying independent. You're increasing your capacity to participate in the life you want to live. You're potentially reducing the amount of care others may have to provide for you down the road. And perhaps most importantly, you're giving the people who love you the gift of having more life with you. That doesn't mean we can prevent every illness. We can't control every diagnosis, every injury, or every circumstance that life puts in front of us. Her father's story is a perfect reminder of that. But there is a lot we can influence. We can stop ignoring the pain that keeps showing up. We can stop telling ourselves that we're too old to get stronger. We can stop waiting until our health becomes an emergency before we decide it matters. We can challenge the myths and the all-or-nothing thinking that keep us from taking care of ourselves today. 💛 Your Health Is Not Selfish I want to take that idea a little further, because I think there's something we need to give ourselves permission to believe: 💛 Taking care of your health is not selfish. And yet, how many of us feel guilty about it? We feel guilty taking an hour to exercise. We feel guilty spending money on our health. We feel guilty going to an appointment, taking a nap, preparing a healthy meal, or simply setting a boundary because we need some time for ourselves. But what if we looked at that differently? What if taking care of yourself isn't taking something away from your family? What if it's actually an investment in the years you get to share with them? We've all seen the difference. Think about the parent who can still get on the roller coaster with their kids. The grandparent who can get down on the floor and build Legos, play dolls, wrestle with the grandkids—and, just as importantly, get back up. Those aren't really fitness goals. They're life goals. Send a text for comments or topics ideas! 👉 Does this sound like you? "I've become incredibly good at finding workarounds... and eventually, I'm worried that those compensations will become my new normal." Being active is key to living a healthy lifestyle. In order to stay active, we need to take care of our bodies. We all occasionally suffer injuries ranging from minor inconveniences all the way to severe, life changing incidents. Today I interviewed Athletic Trainer, Erin Lewis. Erin’s education and training enable her to focus on rehabilitating patients who are recovering from injury. She is able to adapt and modify exercises to best meet the needs of each individual. Erin works with students, everyday individuals and chronically ill patients (such as those with Fibromyalgia and MS, to give them a better quality of life). Everyone is different in the way a disease affects them so she tailors her training to help them where they are at. Her philosophy is to take it day by day and don’t be afraid to “start low and slow” and build up to what they can tolerate. Weekend warriors and generally active people often downplay injuries. They ignore small hurts or develop ways to work around them hoping they will go away on their own. They will end up compensating later in life. If it has been several weeks since an injury, you should feel healed. If you don’t, you need to consult a professional like Erin, address the injury and take proper action toward a full recovery, not just a workaround that will one day come back to haunt you. Injuries do not just disappear. They may hide for a while, but they will resurface, possibly affecting a completely different area that has been compromised by your compensation. There are steps you could be taking to decrease pain or increase limited movement. If you don't know where to start, a primary physician can be a great jump off point for referrals. You need to take time to listen to your body. Just breathe. If you can do that you are living, and you can build from there. 📌 Connect with Lindsey House: • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1 • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@directionnotperfectionpodcast 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work , sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. What if you could actually be stronger, more flexible, and more resilient at 70 than you were at 30? That's the question our guest today has spent decades exploring—and proving that vitality isn't reserved for the young. In fact, he believes that with the right approach, we can build strength, mobility, resilience, and a deeper sense of well-being at virtually any stage of life. As a co-creator of The Happy Body Program , he teaches an approach built around micro-progression, mindful training, and emotional intelligence—because creating a healthier, stronger body isn't just about what happens during your workout. It's also about the small choices you make every day and the way you learn to work with yourself rather than against yourself. We're talking about what it really means to age well, why small consistent progress can create remarkable results over time, and how physical strength and emotional resilience are deeply connected. 👉 Because maybe aging isn't about losing your vitality. Maybe it's about learning how to build a body, mindset, and life that become stronger with every decade. 📌 Connect with Jerzy Gregorek: • Website: https://thehappybody.com/ • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@UCS5Nf1BxwzwdqdS1ccN8_bg • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HardChoicesEasyLife 📌 Connect with Lindsey House: • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1 • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/houselifestyles 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work , sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place. Send a text for comments or topics ideas! Do you ever find yourself eating when you're not physically hungry? If so, you're not alone—and you're certainly not lacking willpower. In this episode of Direction Not Perfection , Lindsey sits down with clinical psychologist, mindfulness coach, and host of From Both Sides of the Couch , Dr. Laurie Bruce , to explore what emotional eating really is—and why understanding it is one of the most important steps toward lasting health. For many women, emotional eating isn't simply about food. It's a learned coping strategy that develops over years of managing stress, overwhelm, loneliness, anxiety, perfectionism, and the constant pressure to care for everyone else before themselves. Rather than focusing on guilt or restriction, Dr. Bruce shares how mindfulness, nervous system regulation, self-compassion, and rebuilding self-trust can help us create a healthier relationship with food—and with ourselves. If you've ever wondered why you know what to do but struggle to follow through, this conversation will leave you feeling understood, hopeful, and equipped with practical ways to begin healing from the inside out. 👉 In This Episode You'll Learn: What emotional eating really is (and what it isn't) Why emotional eating has very little to do with willpower How stress and your nervous system influence eating behaviors Why so many women disconnect from themselves in midlife The role mindfulness plays in changing eating patterns How self-compassion creates more lasting change than self-criticism Practical ways to reconnect with your body and build self-trust Why understanding yourself is the first step toward sustainable health 👉 Remember: Emotional eating isn't a sign that you've failed. It's often a signal that something deeper needs your attention. Healing begins when we replace judgment with curiosity and create space to understand what our emotions are trying to tell us. It felt a little "out there," maybe not very scientific, and honestly, I was skeptical. But over time, my understanding of this tool has evolved, and I've come to believe that hypnosis may be one of the most underutilized resources in health and healing. So before you skip this episode —this conversation is rooted in science , psychology, and the incredible power of the unconscious mind. Today's guest helps individuals use hypnosis to create lasting change in areas like weight loss , relationships, confidence, sleep, pain relief, and emotional healing. We discuss how many of our patterns and beliefs operate beneath conscious awareness and how accessing the unconscious mind can help people break free from old stories and create healthier lives. We also explore some fascinating topics, including past life regression, the connection between unresolved experiences and present-day struggles, and the idea that sometimes healing requires us to uncover what our conscious mind may have forgotten. As our guest says, "Your soul remembers what your mind forgot." Whether you're curious, skeptical, or already familiar with hypnosis, I think you'll find this conversation both thought-provoking and surprisingly practical. Stay tuned. Today’s guest is known for combining ancient wisdom with modern science to help people improve digestion, energy, sleep, resilience, and longevity by working with the body’s natural rhythms instead of constantly fighting against them. In this episode, we explore how everyday habits like circadian timing, seasonal eating, nose breathing, microbiome support, lymphatic health, and nervous system regulation may play a bigger role in digestion and overall health than many people realize. Because digestion is not just about the stomach. Send a text for comments or topics ideas! ⁉️ Why does weight loss sometimes feel like an uphill battle ? Why do healthy habits feel manageable for a short amount of time… but impossible to maintain long term? In today’s episode, we’re talking about something that quietly sabotages consistency for so many women: friction . Friction is the mental, emotional, and logistical resistance that makes healthy choices feel harder than they need to be. It can show up as guilt, perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, unrealistic expectations, low energy, decision fatigue, or trying to force routines that simply don’t fit your real life. And often, the answer isn’t “more discipline.” The answer may be reducing the friction . In this conversation, we explore how small shifts in expectations, routines, and mindset can make healthy habits feel more achievable, sustainable, and supportive — especially for busy women trying to balance work, family, stress, hormones, emotional eating, and everyday life. We walk through real-life examples of: Reducing food guilt and “clean plate club” thinking Making movement feel easier and more realistic Navigating all-or-nothing thinking around exercise Lowering the mental load of weight loss Creating habits that work in real life — not just ideal circumstances Letting go of perfectionism while still moving forward Building consistency through ease instead of self-punishment If you’ve ever felt like you’re constantly fighting yourself when it comes to health, this episode will help you rethink what sustainable change can actually look like . Because sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is stop asking: “How do I force myself to do this?” …and start asking: “How do I make this easier to sustain?” 🧠Remember: healthy habits do not need to feel like punishment to “count.” Direction matters. Consistency matters. Small changes matter. And reducing friction may be the thing that finally helps your goals feel achievable long term. 👉 " The Perfect Day" Worksheet: Click HERE 👤 Connect with Lindsey House: • Website: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com • Podcast: https://www.healthaccountabilitycoach.com/podcast-1 • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/houselifestyles 💛 If you’re tired of chasing quick fixes and want simple weight loss tips that actually work , sustainable fitness and nutrition guidance, and real-life weight loss strategies, you’re in the right place.
