What a weird week! But we're here for all of it, for you, at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed on our latest episode. RESIDENT EVIL (2026). A "Resident Evil" movie that's actually good? Zach Cregger has done the impossible. You don't need to have seen any of the previous films, or played the video game, to have a blast here. This horror movie is insane and hilarious. You'll scream, you'll squirm. Austin Abrams stars as a medical courier having a very bad day. In theaters. THE UPRISING. We're catching up with this action epic from writer-director Paul Greengrass, which came out last week. Andrew Garfield stars as a man known only as the Ploughman, who leads the peasants' revolt of 1381 against England's King Richard II. Co-starring Thomasin McKenzie, Jamie Bell and Cosmo Jarvis. In theaters. THE HISTORY OF CONCRETE. If you enjoyed the HBO series "How To With John Wilson," you'll love this feature debut, which feels like an extended version of his low-key comedy in all the best ways. Wilson does indeed explore the history of concrete in his beloved New York City, but ties in numerous other ideas, themes and oddball characters in the process. We loved it. Three pocast episodes ... in one week? In this economy? We had a lot to catch up on from our time away at the end of summer, and the arrival of September always brings a slew of new releases. Here's what we've got for you this time: BUDDY. This twisted horror comedy came out a couple weeks ago, but this is very much our kind of movie, so we knew we needed to catch up with it. The film from surrealist Casper Kelly (Adult Swim's "Too Many Cooks," "Yule Log") is set in a kitschy '90s kids TV show that looks a lot like "Barney & Friends." But "It's Buddy" is about an orange unicorn who doesn't like it when the young cast members dare to question his authority. Starring Keegan-Michael Key, Cristin Milioti, Delaney Quinn, and Patton Oswalt as a talking backpack named Strappy. In theaters. CALL MY AGENT! THE MOVIE. The French comedy series is now a feature film after four seasons on Netflix. Everyone is back, but now the action has moved from a talent agency to a movie set. Alonso loved this show, but Christy had never seen a single episode, so it was fun to come at it from both perspectives. Camille Cottin, Laure Calamy, Laetitia Casta and George Clooney co-star. One more midweek pop-in because there's so much to discuss now that September has arrived. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast. PRACTICAL MAGIC 2. It's the sequel to "Practical Magic." But can Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman still cast a spell on us, 28 years later? This time, they travel to England to try and end the family's centuries-old curse. Joey King, Lee Pace, Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest co-star. In theaters. PRACTICAL MAGIC (1998). Alonso had never seen the original movie, and Christy only saw it when it came out, so this was a good opportunity to revisit it. Griffin Dunne's film was not exactly a giant hit with critics or audiences back then, but it's gained a cult following over time, which we try to understand. Streaming and rentable. HOPE. This crazy, overlong Korean horror movie from writer-director Na Hong-jin played at the Cannes Film Festival and is now out there for you to enjoy, as well. Something is rampaging through a small harbor town near the North Korean border, and a group of citizens and police officers try and stop it. We liked it for a while. In theaters. We'e been taking a little time off at the end of summer, but we'd never abandon you entirely. Here's what we've reviewed lately on Breakfast All Day. COYOTE VS. ACME. Warner Bros. shelved this movie for the tax write-off in July 2023. Now it's in theaters thanks to Ketchup Entertainment, and the fact that it's great is the best revenge. Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena and all your favorite Looney Tunes characters star in this hilarious live action/animation hybrid. BOORMAN AND THE DEVIL. If you love movies about making movies -- especially movies that are notorious flops -- you'll enjoy this documentary about John Boorman's "Exorcist II: The Heretic." Alonso has to recuse himself because he's friends with writer-director-editor David Kittredge, but we both agree that this is an impressive and entertaining deep-dive into 1970s Hollywood. In theaters. FAME (1980): WAS IT GREAT OR WERE YOU 8? It's our favorite game to play, where we look back at the movies we loved from childhood to see whether they still hold up today. This time, Christy picked "Fame," the musical sensation about students at New York's performing arts high school striving for stardom. It won two Oscars and spawned a hit album and TV series. It's Arthouse Tuesday on a Friday, with some truly great new films. Here's what we reviewed on the latest episode of Breakfast All Day: IT ENDS (NO Spoilers!): It's been such a great year for indie horror movies from exciting, young directors, and "It Ends" continues that trend. The debut feature from writer-director Alex Ullom finds four friends stuck in a car on a seemingly endless road, post-college. This is a non-spoiler review, because we want you to experience this for yourself, but join us at Noon Pacific time on Tuesday, Sept. 8 for a LIVE spoiler chat at our YouTube channel. In theaters. THE RIVALS OF AMZIAH KING: It's a terrible title for one of the best films we've seen all year. Matthew McConaughey is mesmerizing as a beekeeper and musician in small-town Oklahoma. Angelina LookingGlass is a tremendous find as the former foster daughter who comes back into his life. The less you know going into Andrew Patterson's film, the better. In theaters, but not for long, so look for it near you. DON'T SAY GOOD LUCK: Sunny Sandler is charming in this coming-of-age dramedy from director and co-writer Julia Hart ("Fast Color"). She plays a teenager who gets the lead in her high school production of "Waitress: The Musical" just as her mother's cancer returns. Melanie Lynskey, Stephanie Beatriz and Steve Buscemi lead the strong ensemble cast. Streaming now on Netflix. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Hannah Einbinder stars as a queer filmmaker who's reinvigorating a problematic horror franchise, with hopes that its reclusive, original Final Girl (Gillian Anderson) will star. Funny, thoughtful, self-aware and brimming with clever details. In theaters. THE WRONG GIRLS. Kristen Stewart and Alia Shawkat co-star as stoner best friends who stumble across a mysterious substance that gives them unexpected powers, sort of? The feature debut from writer-director Dylan Meyer (Stewart's wife) is a larky romp across Los Angeles. Maybe it helps if you're high, too. Co-starring LaKeith Stanfield, Kate McKinnon, Seth Rogen and Kumail Nanjiani. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! What a treat! Between this and the Wham! in China documentary, it's an accidental George Michael theme week, but we're not complaining. Olivia Wilde stars as a caustic and quick-witted dom to Cooper Hoffman's eager and besotted sub. The latest from veteran queer filmmaker Gregg Araki takes place in the heightened world of LA's contemporary art scene. This movie is a hoot. In theaters. SHEEP IN THE BOX. A rare miss from Japanese writer-director Hirokazu Kore-eda. His film explores some familiar themes about creating a family in unexpected ways, but does so in languid, superficial fashion. A couple in the near future brings a synthetic boy into their home to replace the 7-year-old son they lost. Sounds like a moving premise, but this never grabbed us. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! We're in a bit of a lull for new movies between "The Odyseey" last week and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" next week, but here's what we reviewed for you. HER PRIVATE HELL. The first film in a decade from Nicolas Winding Refn ("Drive," "The Neon Demon") has lavish style but it's totally inscrutable. Go for the clothes and the production design if you must see it. Sophie Thatcher, Charles Melton and Havana Rose Liu star. In theaters. HADESTOWN: THE MUSICAL. This is an extraordinary live capture of AnaÏs Mitchell's Tony-winning musical. All the stars from the original Broadway run are here for this London West End performance. If you've seen "Hadestown," you'll want to see it again in this thrilling, intimate form. Before he was the first president of the United States, George Washington was a scrappy upstart with ambitions and mistakes to make. That's the point of this Angel Studios take on the founding father, set in 1755 Virginia. Starring William Franklyn-Miller, Kelsey Grammer, Ben Kingsley and Mary-Louise Parker. Supergirl may not save humanity, but we're always here for you at Breakfast All Day. Here's what we reviewed in our latest episode: SUPERGIRL. It's getting mostly mixed-negative reviews, and we're on the lower end of that scale. We enjoyed Milly Alcock as the aggressively blasé Kara Zor-El, and we really liked Jason Momoa as the imposing Lobo, but for the most part this "Superman" follow-up is a mess. Matthias Schoenaerts and Eve Ridley co-star. In theaters. JACKASS: BEST AND LAST. After more than a quarter century, Johnny Knoxville and his rowdy, masochistic friends can still make you squirm and howl with laughter at their elaborate stunts. Two young men (Joe Bird and Stacy Clausen) fall in love in a decaying Australian mill town. Religious leaders force them into a conversion therapy that makes them fear an enigmatic, threatening version of each other. Writer-director Adrian Chiarella executes this inspired horror concept extremely well in his feature filmmaking debut. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE!
