  1. Scott Weale, GM - Tandridge GC - GCTUK 160 from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

    Sep 11, 20261 hr 4 min

In this episode of Golf Club Talk UK , Leighton Walker is joined by Scott Weale, General Manager at Tandridge Golf Club, alongside James Brockington, General Manager at Henley Golf Club and co-host of Golf Club Talk UK. The conversation focuses on Scott's journey from greenkeeping and Course Manager to General Manager, and the opportunities and challenges that come with making that transition within the same club. Scott talks about his early introduction to golf and greenkeeping before moving to Tandridge and taking on a significant programme of course improvement. This included major tree work to improve light and air, the installation of a new irrigation system, and an extensive bunker restoration programme with architect Tim Lobb. The aim was to restore elements of Harry Colt's original design while making the course more sustainable and manageable for the greenkeeping team. He also recalls the extraordinary storm that dumped around 50mm of rain in 45 minutes immediately after an England Golf championship, devastating the bunkers and ultimately helping unlock the next phase of the restoration project. With much of the major course investment now complete, Scott explains why the next few years will be about consolidation before attention eventually turns towards the clubhouse. The conversation then moves to his transition into general management, including the importance of formal education through the CMAE, the transferable skills gained from managing a major course budget and the reality of taking responsibility for the whole club. Scott is refreshingly honest about the challenges of his first year in the role, particularly managing his time, resisting the temptation to do everything himself and learning just how much work takes place behind the scenes in a golf club office. He also discusses building a strong team, empowering people and learning to step back from the greenkeeping operation and allow Course Manager Tom Platt to make his own decisions. The conversation moves into Tandridge's future strategy, including Scott's plans to develop the club's food and beverage operation. Rather than simply replicating what other golf clubs are doing, he is looking towards the wider hospitality industry, with a more focused menu, better service and high-quality grab-and-go options designed around the needs of a changing membership. There is also plenty of discussion around member expectations and the delicate balance between protecting the character of a private members' club and making the most of commercial opportunities. Scott talks candidly about the difficulty of accepting that not everyone will agree with the direction of travel, while remaining committed to the long-term vision for Tandridge. Finally, Scott shares his advice for other Course Managers considering the move into general management. His message is clear: the skills are transferable, but the importance of asking for help and surrounding yourself with good people cannot be underestimated. He also reveals his favourite golfing experience at Bled in Slovenia and why great hospitality, attention to detail and memories created with family can make a golf club experience truly special. Tandridge's recent transformation has been significant, and this conversation offers an interesting look behind the scenes at the people, investment and management thinking helping to shape one of England's leading golf clubs. 2. GCMA Insights on GCTUK - The Future of Water Management in Golf from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

    Sep 6, 20261 hr 2 min

In this GCMA Insights episode of Golf Club Talk UK, Leighton Walker is joined by Tom Brooke, CEO of the GCMA, Scott Reeves, Membership Director at BIGGA, Kirsten McEvoy, Head of Sustainability at England Golf, Mike Gray from Castle Water and Andrew Tucker from Thames Water, for an in-depth discussion about water security and the future challenges facing golf clubs. The conversation begins by exploring why water management has become one of the most important issues facing the golf industry. Tom explains why he believes water security is the single biggest challenge facing golf, with wetter winters, increasingly dry summers, rising costs and greater restrictions all placing pressure on clubs and their ability to keep courses playable. Scott provides insight from the greenkeeping community, discussing hand watering, ageing irrigation infrastructure and the agronomic challenges of managing increasingly unpredictable conditions. Kirsten explains how water has become the biggest sustainability topic raised by golf clubs with England Golf. She discusses the organisation's Water Security Toolkit and the importance of clubs taking a case-by-case approach to understanding their water requirements, infrastructure and potential solutions. The discussion also considers opportunities to work with neighbouring landowners and communities, particularly where water storage could provide wider environmental or flood management benefits. A key part of the conversation looks at the relationship between golf and the wider water industry. Andrew explains the unprecedented pressure being placed on water resources and why golf is particularly visible within that debate. He outlines the need for the industry to move away from reliance on potable, drinking-quality water for irrigation and towards alternative water sources and greater on-site storage, while emphasising that golf is not being singled out but has an opportunity to lead by example. The panel also examines the UK's national water target and the drive to reduce business water consumption. Smart water metering is discussed in detail, with Mike addressing misconceptions around the technology and explaining how better data can help clubs understand their consumption, identify leaks and improve billing accuracy. The conversation also highlights simple measures that can make an immediate difference, from fixing leaking toilets and dripping taps to improving irrigation efficiency. A major theme throughout the episode is the need for better data and greater collaboration. The GCMA, BIGGA, England Golf and the water industry are working together through the Retailers and Wholesalers Group to build a clearer picture of how golf clubs currently use, source and store water. A new industry survey and "State of the Nation" report are also discussed, with clubs being encouraged to participate so that future policy, regulation and investment decisions can be based on robust evidence. The discussion also focuses on how clubs can plan for the future without necessarily committing immediately to major expenditure. The panel considers the importance of taking short-, medium- and long-term steps, from improving irrigation systems and reducing clubhouse consumption to investigating reservoirs, water harvesting and alternative supplies. Kirsten and Tom also highlight the importance of starting this process early, as planning, approvals and funding for larger projects can take several years. The conversation concludes with a clear message for golf club boards, committees, managers and greenkeepers: water needs to become a much higher priority within business resilience planning. While the panel provides reassurance that golf clubs are not facing an immediate loss of their water supplies, the direction of travel is clear. Clubs that start planning now will be better positioned to manage future droughts, restrictions and changing water availability. Whether you're a General Manager, course manager, greenkeeper, board member or committee member, this episode provides an important insight into the future of water management in golf and the practical steps clubs can take to improve their resilience. 3. The GM & Chairman Relationship (David Addison & Steve Neilson) - GCTUK 159 from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

    Aug 28, 20261 hr 13 min

Leighton Walker is joined by David Addison, General Manager at Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club, and Steve Neilson, Chair of the club, for an in-depth conversation about governance, leadership and the relationship between a golf club's board and management team. David returns to the podcast for a third time, and Steve explains his route into the chair role and how his background in business, construction and dispute resolution has influenced his approach to club governance. A major focus of the conversation is the governance structure that has helped transform Barassie. The club moved away from a traditional model of the captain effectively overseeing everything to a structure that separates the business responsibilities of the council from the golf and social responsibilities of the captains' committee. David and Steve explain how that has created clearer lines of responsibility, greater accountability and a stronger platform for long-term development. The pair also discuss the importance of trust, communication and empowerment in the relationship between chairman and general manager. Rather than becoming involved in day-to-day operations, Steve's role is one of oversight, challenge and support, allowing David and his senior management team to get on with running the club while ensuring decisions are properly tested and reported. Strategy has also become increasingly important. David and Steve explain how the club brought together its senior management team and past chairs to develop a longer-term strategy, supported by data, external facilitation and member engagement. They also discuss the importance of educating incoming volunteers about the club's history, financial position and governance structure so that new board members understand what they are inheriting. The conversation explores the benefits of professional development and engagement beyond the club, with David explaining how Barassie has increasingly encouraged its management and greenkeeping teams to attend industry events, visit other clubs and share ideas. The aim is to bring new thinking back to the club while ensuring that investment in development delivers a measurable return. Leighton, David and Steve also discuss some of the key appointments that have helped move Barassie forward, particularly the recruitment of and excellent Course Manager, alongside the development of a strong senior management team. With greater investment in staffing, the club has been able to strengthen its course, professional operation, clubhouse and wider member experience. The conversation isn't without its challenges. David and Steve reflect on previous course redevelopment proposals that narrowly failed to secure member approval and the lessons learned about communication, engagement and avoiding an "us and them" mentality between members and the club's volunteers. Looking ahead, Barassie has an ambitious programme of investment, including a major refurbishment of the men's locker room, bunker redevelopment, potential changes to three of the course's weaker holes, improvements to practice facilities and plans for a new swing room. Irrigation and water security are also becoming increasingly important considerations for the club. Throughout the conversation, David and Steve return to the same themes: good people, clear responsibilities, trust, transparency, accountability and continual improvement. This is a fascinating look at how a chairman and general manager can work together effectively while maintaining the right balance between governance and management. For anyone involved in golf club boards, committees or management teams, this is a practical and honest conversation about building a successful governance structure, empowering professional staff and creating the conditions for a club to keep moving forward. 4. Trending Topics with England Golf on GCTUK - The Golfers' Journey from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

    Aug 20, 202648 min

Leighton Walker is joined by Richard Flint, COO of England Golf, Joshua Reynolds, Data and Insights Manager, and Matt Draper, Development and Memberships Director, to discuss England Golf's latest research into participation – The Golfers' Journey. Originally undertaken in 2018, the research has been refreshed to look at the full spectrum of golf participation, from leisure golfers playing crazy golf, adventure golf, driving ranges and simulators through to recreational and regular golfers and golf club members. The research estimates that more than 12 million adults in England participated in some form of golf in the previous 12 months, including around five million leisure golfers and more than 4.5 million recreational golfers. The figures highlight the enormous potential market for golf beyond traditional club membership. One of the most striking findings is that 73% of leisure golfers are female, while female representation falls significantly as participation moves towards regular on-course golf and club membership. The panel discusses what this, alongside other findings around ethnic diversity and disability, tells us about the opportunities – and barriers – facing the industry. The discussion also explores why people play golf, with enjoying the outdoors, spending time with family and friends, fun and entertainment, relaxation and wellbeing all featuring strongly. The panel considers whether golf does enough to communicate these wider benefits and whether the industry needs to talk about the game differently. For golf clubs, the research raises important questions around membership. With more than two million people playing an 18-hole course at least once a month but not currently taking up membership, could more flexible membership options, shorter formats and stronger links with off-course facilities provide a route into club membership? Richard, Joshua and Matt also look at the importance of using data to challenge perceptions of golf, the environmental and economic contribution of the sport, advocacy and word of mouth, and how England Golf intends to build on The Golfers' Journey through further research into areas including membership, women in golf, coaching, wellbeing, technology and AI. The overriding message is a positive one: there are millions of people already engaging with golf – the opportunity now is to understand their journey better and make it easier for more of them to take the next step. 5. Candi Watkins, GM - Ponteland Golf Club - GCTUK 158 from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

    Aug 14, 202651 min

Leighton Walker is joined by Candi Watkins, General Manager at Ponteland Golf Club in Newcastle, for a wide-ranging conversation about her journey into golf club management, the lessons she has learned across more than 14 years in the industry, and her approach to leading a modern members' club. Candi's route into golf was far from conventional. Originally working in business development within vehicle finance, she moved into golf through an administration role at her local club after having her first child. That opportunity has developed into a career spanning several different clubs and roles, including City of Newcastle Golf Club and Sharpley Golf Club, before taking on the General Manager role at Ponteland just over a year ago. The conversation explores how that varied experience has shaped Candi's approach to management, from finance, marketing and business development to building strong teams, putting effective systems in place and understanding that every golf club requires a different operating model. At Ponteland, Candi inherited a club with enormous potential, a strong and passionate membership and a great golf course. The club is now at full membership with a waiting list for the first time in more than 25 years. She explains what has driven that growth and why clubs cannot afford to become complacent when things are going well. Leighton and Candi discuss changing member expectations and why golf clubs need to look beyond the industry for ideas, particularly when it comes to hospitality, customer service, communication and technology. They also explore leadership, staff culture, the importance of being visible around the club and how to deal with difficult decisions when not everyone agrees. The conversation also looks at the longer-term challenges facing golf clubs, including sustainability, water security, investment, automation and renewable energy. Candi talks about Ponteland's new borehole, the potential of its large practice ground and the opportunities to attract the next generation of golfers. Membership models also come under the spotlight, with Candi arguing that clubs should consider more flexible pathways into full membership while continuing to strengthen the value of the core membership proposition. With Ponteland approaching its centenary year, Candi shares her vision for the club and why she believes it is possible to respect a club's history without allowing tradition to prevent progress. From leadership and culture to membership, governance, sustainability and the increasingly complex role of the modern General Manager, this is a practical and honest conversation about running a successful members' golf club and preparing it for the future. 6. GCMA Insights on GCTUK – Building Your Professional Development Pathway from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

    Aug 7, 20261 hr 0 min

In this GCMA Insights episode of Golf Club Talk UK, Leighton Walker is joined by Gareth Morgan, Professional Development Manager at the GCMA, for an in-depth conversation about professional development, career planning and why continuous learning has become essential for today's golf club managers. The discussion begins by reflecting on how opportunities for education within the golf industry have evolved over the past two decades. Gareth shares his own experiences of entering club management at a time when structured development opportunities were limited, before exploring how today's managers have access to a far broader range of qualifications, learning pathways and professional support. A central theme throughout the episode is the importance of taking ownership of your own development. Gareth explains why every manager's career journey is different, how identifying long-term aspirations can help shape meaningful learning opportunities, and why education should be viewed as an ongoing investment rather than something undertaken only when problems arise. Leighton and Gareth discuss the value of creating a personal development pathway, recognising individual learning preferences and combining formal education such as that on offer through GCMA - with informal learning through networking, mentoring, podcasts, webinars and shared experiences. The conversation highlights how continuous development helps managers become more effective leaders while adapting to the changing demands of modern golf club management. The episode also explores the practical challenge of securing support for professional development within clubs. Gareth shares advice on planning education well in advance, incorporating development into annual budgets and helping boards and committees understand the long-term value that investment in people delivers to both individuals and their clubs. A significant part of the discussion focuses on aspiring managers and those beginning their careers within the industry. Gareth explains why future leaders should openly communicate their ambitions, seek guidance from experienced professionals and build strong networks, while encouraging General Managers to actively support and develop the next generation of club leaders. The conversation concludes with practical advice on ensuring learning translates into meaningful action. Gareth outlines his "Three Pledges" approach, encouraging delegates to identify tangible actions immediately after completing a course, helping transform new ideas into lasting improvements within their clubs. Whether you're an experienced General Manager, an aspiring leader or a committee member looking to better support your management team, this episode provides valuable insight into building a culture of continuous learning and investing in the long-term development of both people and golf clubs. The discussion centres on Talon Links, Golf Canada's new free-to-play putting park that is redefining what accessible golf can look like. Designed by Himalayas Golf, Talon Links is far more than mini golf. Built across two acres with rolling fescue dunes, natural features, dramatic contouring and premium synthetic putting surfaces, it delivers an authentic golfing experience that welcomes players of every age and ability. Grant explains the vision behind Golf Canada's new Home for Canadian Golf, which combines its headquarters, the relocated Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Talon Links into a unique destination designed to grow participation and engage the local community. Paul shares the creative process behind designing the putting park, from the first sketches drawn in a bunker at Glen Abbey through to creating one of the most distinctive short-format golf experiences anywhere in the world. The episode also explores the inspiration taken from the great links courses of Scotland and Ireland, the recreation of Nick Taylor's famous 72-foot winning putt from the 2023 RBC Canadian Open as Talon Links' closing hole, and why Golf Canada believes facilities like this can play a major role in introducing more people to the game. 9. Panel Session 1 - The Financial Health & Sustainability of Clubs - GCTUK 155 from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

    Jul 16, 20261 hr 12 min

This episode sees Leighton joined in the Story Ninety-Four - Oxford Podcast Studios by an expert panel to tackle one of the biggest questions facing golf clubs today: how do clubs build long-term financial resilience while the industry is still enjoying strong trading conditions? Representing a broad cross-section of the industry are John McCormack (Club Benchmarking EMEA), Paul Mould (Accountancy Matters), Gavin Anderson (England Golf), Will Hewitt (59club) and Ben Laing (Branston Golf & Country Club) . Together they explore why now is the time for clubs to plan ahead rather than assume the current boom and strong conditions will continue indefinitely. The discussion covers the importance of robust strategic planning, governance and long-term capital investment, with the panel highlighting why many clubs remain underprepared for future economic challenges. They examine rising operating costs, staffing pressures, inflation, major infrastructure spending, and why diversification of income streams has become essential rather than optional. The conversation also looks beyond finances, exploring how customer experience, staff engagement and culture increasingly separate thriving clubs from those that struggle. The panel debates why understanding member data, benchmarking performance and acting on meaningful feedback should underpin every major investment decision, while also discussing the opportunities presented by flexible membership models, technology and emerging revenue streams such as driving range technology and padel. This is the first of a two-part panel discussion packed with practical insights for golf club managers, owners, directors and committee members looking to future-proof their clubs for the next decade. Tom opens the conversation by exploring why leadership development is so important, particularly within the club sector, and why personal growth can sometimes be overlooked in formal education and management programmes. While technical knowledge and operational expertise remain important, the discussion focuses on the value of developing the skills, behaviours and self-awareness that enable leaders to have a greater impact on their teams and organisations. The guests share how increased self-awareness and a greater understanding of human behaviour have helped them become more effective leaders and colleagues. A key theme is the role emotional intelligence plays within the wider leadership toolkit. The panel discusses how understanding yourself can help you better understand those around you, enabling leaders to adapt their approach to different individuals, communicate more effectively and create stronger, more engaged teams. Ben and Scott also share how their development has equipped them to handle difficult conversations with greater confidence and empathy, balancing accountability with understanding while maintaining positive working relationships. The discussion extends beyond team leadership to the challenge of leading upwards, examining how leaders can build productive relationships with boards and committees, manage differing perspectives and influence decision-making through effective communication and trust. May 26, 20261 hr 2 min

Alex Buckner joins Leighton & James to talk about his journey from aspiring club manager to one of the game's rising tour coaches. He opens up on building a coaching brand from scratch, why most golfers chase the wrong fixes, and how identity, systems and communication became the foundation of his success. The conversation dives deep into club coaching, and elite coaching, drawing the balance between technical and mental performance, and why pressure is something the best players actively train for. Alex shares stories from working with players including Marco Penge, Georgia Hall, Richard Mansell and Grant Forrest, explaining how long-term development often means being willing to struggle in the short term. There's also insight into the modern coaching landscape, from social media myths and golf technology to data, biomechanics and what separates great coaches from great communicators. 17. The GM & Course Manager Relationship with Monique Landman - GCTUK 150!! from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

    May 11, 20261 hr 18 min

Leighton & James return for a wide-ranging catch-up conversation, with Leighton sharing a personal update and discussing the positive future direction of Golf Club Talk UK and The Greenprint, including increased investment of time, energy, and resources into both platforms. The conversation then turns to leadership, communication, and culture in golf clubs as Leighton welcomes friend of the pod Monique Landman to discuss one of the most important relationships in the industry: the partnership between the General Manager and the Course Manager. Monique is the Chief Empathy Officer at Unchain and Partner for People and Performance at Himalayas Golf. A central theme throughout is simple but powerful - greenkeepers are the experts, and great GM's position them as such. The best clubs operate well when the GM and Course Manager act as one team, working shoulder to shoulder with alignment, and mutual respect. The discussion explores why GM's should empower and elevate their Course Managers, putting greenkeepers into the arena through committee/board meetings, stakeholder discussions, and strategic conversations, while also protecting and advocating for their teams internally. The episode also focuses heavily on expanding the influence of Course Managers, particularly when communicating the value behind major projects such as a £100,000 bunker renovation for example. The key here is presenting well-researched and thoughtful proposals so that the decision makes itself. The conversation also dives into a great analogy with agronomy, including why hollow tining is essential for building stronger root systems to allow better growth. They also discuss phototropic and gravitropic growth in turfgrass — how the plant responds both upward toward light and downward into the ground. These can both be translated into the leadership world. Throughout the episode, the message is clear: successful golf operations depend on alignment between management and course teams, with leadership built on trust, empowerment, communication, and shared purpose. 18. Trending Topics with England Golf - Golf, Land & Planning: A Positive Perspective from Golf Club Talk UK, opens in a new tab

*]:pointer-events-auto [content-visibility:auto] supports-[content-visibility:auto]:[contain-intrinsic-size:auto_100lvh] R6Vx5W_threadScrollVars scroll-mb-[calc(var(--scroll-root-safe-area-inset-bottom,0px)+var(--thread-response-height))] scroll-mt-[calc(var(--header-height)+min(200px,max(70px,20svh)))]" dir="auto" data-turn-id= "request-WEB:32db5832-f86a-4852-a720-9b25d532ea56-2" data-testid= "conversation-turn-6" data-scroll-anchor="false" data-turn= "assistant"> Golf courses are increasingly part of planning discussions because they occupy large areas of land, often near towns and cities where housing demand is rising. While some renewed publicity has sharpened the debate, that visibility can and should lead to a more balanced conversation about what this land delivers beyond sport, alongside legitimate questions about access, land use priorities, and long-term value. Modern golf is increasingly being recognised for its role in land stewardship. Courses provide extensive green space in developed areas, support wildlife habitats and biodiversity corridors, and maintain tree cover, grassland, and water features. In many cases, they act as a buffer against urban sprawl. At the same time, this value is not uniform; outcomes depend heavily on how land is managed and how accessible those benefits are to the wider community. Well-managed courses can function as multi-use landscapes rather than single-purpose venues. Environmental standards across the sport are improving. Many clubs are reducing chemical and water use, expanding natural rough and wild areas, and creating habitats for pollinators and wildlife. However, there is still variation across the sector, and expectations are rising. Organisations such as England Golf are supporting clubs with sustainability frameworks and practical guidance, helping to embed more consistent and measurable environmental management. Habitat mapping is becoming an important tool. Clubs are using it to understand their ecological baseline, demonstrate environmental value, and identify opportunities to enhance biodiversity. This is increasingly relevant in planning, where evidence-based environmental value carries more weight and unsupported claims carry less. Planning policy, including the National Planning Policy Framework and Biodiversity Net Gain requirements, means land is now assessed on environmental, social, and economic contribution. This creates both pressure and opportunity for golf: pressure where land is seen as underutilised, and opportunity where courses can clearly evidence their contribution, potentially including Biodiversity Net Gain delivery. For clubs, the shift is practical rather than theoretical. Those managing land with long-term environmental intent, improving transparency through data, and engaging proactively with planners and local communities are better positioned to navigate change. Those that do not may find decisions being made without them. The direction of travel is clear. Golf is moving from being seen as land-intensive to being judged on how responsibly that land is managed. Where clubs can demonstrate real environmental and community value, they are far better placed to protect, enhance, and justify their role in the landscape going forward. https://www.englandgolf.org Connect with Us : Instagram: @golfclubtalkuk Website: Golf Club Talk UK https://www.linkedin.com/in/leighton-walker-2708b627/ A big thanks to our partners: Toro - Click here for more information Support us here: https://buymeacoffee.com/gctuk Rate & Review Please leave a 5-star review and share this episode with your golf circle!
