In a radical departure, the Milksops are discussing comics that are recent! We begin a deep dive on the early issues of DC's hugely popular Absolute line. We start with a home run smash of a comic: Absolute Batman #1.
EPISODE 367 - We return to our special guest format and welcome comedy writer Joan Ford! Joan has written for several animated TV shows and is a long-time fan of Archie / Uncle Scrooge / Looney Toons comics. She has written and drawn very funny comics book in the "funny animal" style, albeit with adult themes: BIG TITTY TRANNY DUCK. It's about a trans duck who trades sex work for cigarettes. The book also features vignettes with BTTD's friends Anarcho-Otter and RageBate Rabbit. Joan is a trans woman though as her friend we hope the comic is biographical only in terms of being very fun and funny. We generally ask out guests to pick a comic to discuss. Joan chose PHONOGRAM, Volume 2, Issue 3. This is a comic where introduces a type of magician called Phonomancer - they can use recorded music to perform magic. It's a very dense, niche comment on music tastes and music journalism of the 2000s. For Loose Screws, Kevin discusses the Children of Time book series, Will discusses the baseball YouTube channel Red Seat Radio, and Joan talks about binging the 1980s TV show Beauty and the Beast. ------- Joan's instagram is @joanhaleyford - https://www.instagram.com/joanhaleyford/ Sop-scribe to support the show and for bonus episodes at https://www.screwitpodcasts.com/ There's link to our free Discord there too! EPISODE 364 - We go into the "zero" issues of Mind MGMT, which are given negative numbers in the trade compilation. These amount to supplemental stories about the mind agent agency. We learn stories of a rival Russian agency, Maru's breakthrough that led to her first book and the birth of the agency itself. These side stories are, in a way, the main course of the Mind MGMT world! We also discuss at length Marvel Comics recent decision to move from NYC to the Los Angeles area. In Loose Screws, Will discusses a talk he saw with comics legend Frank Miller. And Kevin discusses the video game trope of characters climbing a lot (Arkham City, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted and the new James Bond game). ------- Sop-scribe to support the show and for bonus episodes at https://www.screwitpodcasts.com/ There's link to our free Discord there too! EPISODE 354: We learn more about Abe Sapien's former life as Langdon Everett Caul in BPRD Volume 7 - Garden of Souls! We also talk a ton about BPRD in general! EPISODE 353 - The Milksops continue their coverage of the Hellboy universe with their first big look at the spin-off series "B.P.R.D." We start with trade paper back volume 6, which is the arc called "The Universal Machine." "B.P.R.D." stands for Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense, which was Hellboy's employer until he quit at the end of his "Conqueror Worm" story. Now we see the gang without Hellboy. As Kevin says, the Hellboy stories feel like movies, and B.P.R.D. is like a television show. Although there is a plot which evolves, it feels more episodic. And although the stakes are as high as possible (destruction of all humanity seems perpetually JUST ABOUT TO HAPPEN) - the tone feels lighter, too. We learn a lot about Abe Sapien, Johann Krauss, and other members of the Bureau. We see the story get handed off from universe creator Mike Mignolia to John Arcudy and Guy Davis and others. Loose Screws: Kevin talks about Shrinking and other shows he watched, and Will discusses how he established his Canadian citizenship. ------------------- Email us at screwitcomics@gmail.com Subscribe for bonus episodes and to support the show at screwitpodcasts.com
