Do you want to lose stubborn weight, regain your energy and feel healthier as you get older — without making food and health a full-time job? Are you struggling with appetite, cravings or a changing waistline? Or wondering which health advice actually matters when everyone seems to be telling you something different? My mission with this podcast is to help Christian women become healthier — and wiser about their health — so they can steward their bodies well and live the full and fruitful lives God has given them. Hi, I’m Laura Hargrave. Christian, Master Certified Nutritionist, Health Coach and two-time bestselling author. I’ve worked in nutrition and metabolic health for more than 25 years, coached more than 1,000 people one-to-one, and previously worked as a Medical Research Manager within the NHS. My own journey took me from being an overweight smoker at university to a vegan marathon and ultramarathon runner who looked extremely healthy on paper — but wasn’t thriving. Along the way, I learned that doing more “healthy things” doesn’t necessarily mean you’re giving your body what it actually needs. Here we’ll talk honestly about weight loss, metabolic health, appetite and cravings, nutrition, blood sugar, energy, healthy ageing, habits and health research — with plenty of practical help for working out what matters, what applies to you and what to do next . And we’ll approach it all through a Christian philosophy of health: your body is worthy of care, but your worth isn’t determined by your body. We are responsible, but we are not sovereign. Your health matters. Steward it wisely, so your body can better support the life God has given you. Are you trying to lose weight by pushing harder, eating less and relying on willpower to keep you on track? Do you keep losing the same few pounds, only to regain them when the restriction becomes too hard to sustain? And could the real key to lasting fat loss be patience, perseverance and a handful of simple daily habits repeated for long enough? In this episode, I’m sharing why sustainable weight loss is far less about white-knuckling your way through hunger and far more about building a moderate calorie deficit you can actually live with. We look at why fat loss is more like a marathon than a sprint, why dramatic short-term efforts often backfire, and how the seemingly boring things—protein, vegetables, fibre, water, walking, sleep and appetite regulation—can quietly produce the result you want when you repeat them consistently. Could your struggle with food sometimes be more than hunger, cravings or hormones? How do you know when appetite has moved from being something you experience to something that is beginning to rule you? And how can you address gluttony honestly as a Christian without falling into shame, harsh restriction or food obsession? In this episode, I’m sharing a clear, Biblical look at gluttony, appetite and self-control so you can recognise when food may be taking a place it wasn't supposed to occupy, understand the difference between legitimate hunger and disordered gratification, and respond with both conviction and hope. We’ll look at five signs your appetite may be ruling you, why biology can explain appetite without always excusing our response to it, and how grace helps us practise genuine self-government rather than condemnation. I’ll also show you why not every hunger signal should be answered with food — and how learning to discern what your appetite is actually asking for can help you move towards greater freedom. In this episode: What gluttony actually is — and what it is not Why body size cannot diagnose gluttony Five signs appetite may be becoming a master The difference between hunger, desire, comfort-seeking and excess When the right response is nourishment — and when it may simply be “no” How repentance differs from food shame Why grace trains us into freedom and self-control How The Five Hunger Voices™ can help you discern what is really driving the urge to eat What Paul means when he says, “I will not be brought under the power of any” Scriptures mentioned: 1 Corinthians 6:12 Resources & links: Five Hunger Voices™ Free Cheatsheet: https://healthinfaith.systeme.io/fhv Health in Faith Website and Coaching: https://healthinfaith.com/ Appetite Redeemed™ — learn to discern your appetite, retrain eating patterns, address what food cannot fix and practise biblical self-government: https://healthinfaith.systeme.io/appetite-redeemed Richard Baxter — Directions Against Gluttony: https://www.gracegems.org/28/directions_against_gluttony.htm Eating to the Glory™: https://healthinfaith.systeme.io/ettg Key question to take away: Is this appetite serving me — or ruling me?
Are you assuming every urge to eat means you have a self-control problem? Do you find yourself feeling guilty after emotional eating, only to become even more confused about what your body actually needed? And could the goal be less about becoming a “perfect eater” and more about learning to respond to food, hunger and emotions with wisdom? In this episode, I’m sharing five things Christian women need to understand about emotional eating, self-control and food. We look at why not every urge to eat is emotional, why genuine hunger and nutrient needs matter, how food can legitimately carry pleasure, comfort and connection without becoming your automatic answer to every emotion, and why guilt often hides the very clues that could help you understand your eating patterns. You’ll also hear why self-control does not mean ignoring legitimate hunger, how micronutrient needs can affect appetite, why I eventually found the “food is only fuel” approach too simplistic, and how curiosity can help you uncover what is really happening before you reach for food. Most importantly, I explain why the goal is not perfect eating or rigid control, but becoming a wiser, more discerning eater who can enjoy food, course-correct without punishment and move on without shame. Join Eating to the Glory™: https://healthinfaith.systeme.io/ettg - A transformational 3-day live experience for Christians to sanctify their eating and hunger. Do you know exactly what you should be eating, yet still find yourself craving food you do not even really want? Do your evenings end with food noise, grazing or opening and closing cupboards, wondering why your good intentions disappeared? And could the overeating you blame yourself for at 9 p.m. actually have been set up by what happened at 8 a.m.? In this episode, I’m sharing an excerpt from Day 1 of my Eating to the Glory™ training and exploring the missing appetite piece that so many women overlook. We look at why knowing what to eat is not the same as understanding why you eat, how an overactive appetite can be shaped by stress, tiredness, rushed meals, inadequate nourishment and emotional triggers, and why curiosity is often far more useful than criticism when you find yourself overeating. You’ll also hear why your evening appetite may actually begin much earlier in the day, how repeated eating patterns can become deeply ingrained neural pathways, and why writing down what happened before the craving can help bring subconscious habits into conscious awareness. I also share parts of my own journey—from eating healthily but not always wisely, to recognising how food had become tied to procrastination, comfort and avoidance—and why learning to understand your appetite can free up more energy, focus and spiritual sharpness for the things God has called you to do. Are we giving enough attention to the way we eat as part of our Christian walk—or have food and health somehow been left out of the sanctification conversation? Could some of the health struggles we keep praying about be connected to everyday habits, modern food choices and a lack of discernment around what we are putting into our bodies? And have we normalised overeating, sugar and highly processed food in Christian culture while overlooking the impact they may be having on our energy, clarity and ability to serve well? In this episode, I’m sharing a series of uncomfortable truths about food, health and Christian sanctification that are rarely discussed from the pulpit. We look at why the body matters in our walk with God, why Christians need more discernment around the modern food system, how metabolic health is influenced by everyday eating patterns, and why the rules around food have changed so dramatically over the past century. I also challenge some of the assumptions we make about foods labelled “healthy,” and why a little nutrition knowledge can sometimes be misleading. You’ll also hear why I believe the Church has normalised overeating and indiscriminate eating, how hospitality can unintentionally become an excuse for constantly offering sugar and processed foods, and why there can be an uncomfortable disconnect between church gatherings full of cakes and prayer lists full of health problems. This is not about condemnation, food perfectionism or blaming people for illness; it is about inviting the Lord into the practical stewardship of our bodies and learning to eat with greater wisdom, self-control and discernment. Do you start the week determined to eat well, only to find yourself negotiating with cravings by Tuesday afternoon? Are you keeping promises to everyone else while quietly losing trust in your ability to keep the promises you make to yourself? And could your appetite be communicating a genuine physical, emotional or spiritual need rather than proving that you lack discipline? In this episode, I’m sharing why you keep breaking promises to yourself around food—and why the real problem is probably not a lack of knowledge, willpower or self-control. I explain how repeated cycles of restriction, negotiation and overeating can slowly erode your self-trust, why your appetite and cravings are forms of communication rather than enemies to fight, and how answering every hunger signal with the same food keeps you trapped in frustration. You’ll also hear about my own experience of rigidly refusing to eat after 5 p.m. while running long distances and working evening shifts, only to eventually find myself ravenously eating everything available. I explain why that pattern was not evidence that I was undisciplined or ungodly, but that I had created unrealistic rules and ignored genuine hunger for too long. This episode will help you begin distinguishing between the different needs of your body, mind and soul so you can respond appropriately, rebuild trust in yourself and pursue weight loss from a place of nourishment rather than constant battle. Are overeating and sugar cravings quietly weakening your confidence, energy and walk with God? Do you start the week with good intentions, only to find yourself back in the kitchen by mid-afternoon or evening, wondering why you still cannot seem to break the cycle? And could the issue be deeper than food itself—rooted in habit, emotional comfort, metabolic imbalance and the way you have learned to push through exhaustion? In this episode, I’m sharing four important things Christian women need to understand about overeating and sugar addiction, including why sugar often becomes a way to push through tiredness, how food can act as counterfeit comfort, why repeated disobedience around appetite can begin to erode spiritual confidence, and why simply trying harder rarely creates lasting freedom. I also share how the Lord confronted me about my own pattern of eating when I was not hungry and how that became the beginning of genuine change, so you can move out of guilt and condemnation and begin responding with greater honesty, wisdom and intentionality. You’ll also hear practical steps to help you stabilise satiation, identify the emotions and moments that trigger overeating, interrupt cravings before they become automatic and begin bringing your appetite back under the headship of the Lord. This is not about punishing yourself or becoming obsessed with food; it is about understanding what is really driving your hunger, retraining habitual responses and creating a precise, supported path towards greater peace, freedom and self-control. Are you trying to silence hunger without understanding why your body keeps asking for food? Could your cravings be driven by poor sleep, blood-sugar swings, emotional stress or meals that are simply not satisfying enough? And are you blaming yourself for lacking self-control when your hunger may actually be speaking a language you have never learned to recognise? In this episode, I’m sharing why silencing hunger is not the same as healing your appetite, how appetite-suppressing approaches can miss the root cause, and why the goal should be genuine satisfaction rather than simply eating less. I also explain the five hunger languages, the difference between physical and emotional hunger, and how protein, sleep, blood sugar, stress and eating rhythms can all influence your appetite, so you can reduce food noise, feel more in control and support your health without shame or extreme restriction. You’ll also hear why GLP-1 medications may reduce hunger without necessarily teaching you how to nourish your body, recognise emotional triggers or rebuild healthy eating patterns, and I’ll give you a practical challenge to help you catch the moments when you reach for food without true physical hunger. This episode will help you begin understanding what your appetite is trying to tell you, so you can respond with wisdom, support your metabolism and move towards greater freedom around food. Is your appetite quietly taking up more mental, emotional and spiritual space than it should? Could food, cravings or constant snacking be dulling your energy, confidence and sensitivity to what God is asking you to do? And is it possible that the struggle is not simply a lack of discipline, but a combination of biology, stress, fear, avoidance and unmet emotional needs? In this episode, I’m sharing why appetite is about far more than weight, how dysregulated eating can begin to shrink your confidence and calling, and why so many committed Christians still feel preoccupied with food. I also share my own experience of using food subtly during a season of fear and playing small, the connection between appetite and metabolic health, and how to begin rebuilding freedom without shame, extreme dieting or relying solely on willpower, so you can restore your clarity, energy and responsiveness to the Lord. You’ll hear why protein, sleep, blood sugar, stress and eating rhythms all influence appetite, how emotional eating can become a way of avoiding discomfort or courageous action, and why food was designed to nourish your calling rather than quietly sedate it. This is an invitation to understand your appetite more deeply, rebuild the broken-down walls around your health and step into a new season feeling lighter, freer and better fuelled for your Kingdom purpose. You may have noticed that maintaining your weight takes more effort than it used to. Perhaps you've lost weight in the past only to gain it back again. Or maybe you've reached a point where you're beginning to think less about looking younger and more about staying strong, active, independent, and healthy for the decades ahead. The truth is, the number on the scales tells only a small part of the story. Most people have spent years focusing on body weight, yet very few understand their body fat levels, muscle mass, or what those numbers may be revealing about their future health. And if you've ever felt frustrated by the scales, confused by conflicting advice, or concerned about maintaining your energy and vitality as you get older, this conversation may help you see things in a completely different way. In this episode, I'm sharing why body fat levels often reveal far more about your health than body weight ever could, the seven questions every Christian over 40 should ask, why losing muscle can be more damaging than carrying a few extra pounds, the hidden dangers of visceral fat, and how body composition influences your metabolism, strength, independence, and long-term health. You'll discover why healthy stewardship isn't about becoming lighter, but about becoming stronger, more resilient, and better equipped to serve God, your family, and others for years to come. In This Episode You'll Learn Why body fat levels matter more than body weight The difference between losing fat and losing muscle How visceral fat impacts metabolic health Why strength becomes increasingly important after 40 The connection between body composition and healthy aging How body fat levels affect metabolic syndrome risk Why healthy stewardship is about strength, not vanity The daily habits that quietly shape your future health Resources & Links Mentioned 🌟 Book a Metabolic Breakthrough Consultation https://healthinfaith.com/breakthrough 👉 Join Health for Life - my 12 week group coaching program for Christians https://healthinfaith.com/hfl 🎁 Download the FREE 4-Step Metabolic Health Reset Guide https://healthinfaith.com/guide 📩 Contact Laura https://healthinfaith.com/contact Episode Blog Post & Notes: https://healthinfaith.com/2026/05/30/45-body-fat-levels-christians-over-40/
Tired all the time, struggling with stubborn belly fat, dealing with rising blood sugar or brain fog, and wondering why your body no longer seems to respond the way it used to? Ever feel like modern life slowly wears people down while everyone calls it “normal aging”? Could seemingly separate problems like fatigue, cravings, high blood pressure, and weight gain actually be connected? In this episode, I’m unpacking the hidden metabolic crisis affecting millions of people today: metabolic syndrome. We’ll explore why so many common health struggles are often symptoms of the same underlying metabolic dysfunction, why modern healthcare frequently treats these warning signs in silos, and why the good news is that metabolic syndrome is often highly reversible with wise, consistent stewardship. I’ll walk you through the five key warning signs to watch for, what insulin resistance is really doing inside the body, and practical ways to begin restoring energy, blood sugar balance, metabolic flexibility, and long-term health naturally. If you’ve been feeling frustrated, inflamed, exhausted, or stuck in a body that no longer feels like your own, this episode will help you understand what may really be happening beneath the surface — and why there is genuine hope. Feeling frustrated because you’re trying so hard to get healthy… but nothing seems to work? Wondering if your body is actually broken—or if you’ve just been given the wrong plan? Could better health be less about more effort… and more about finally understanding the right “unlock code”? In this episode, I’m sharing a personal story about my washing machine mysteriously refusing to work—and how God unexpectedly used it to reveal a powerful lesson about health, metabolism, and healing. We’ll talk about why so many people stay stuck despite trying harder and harder, how health often becomes much simpler when you understand the right sequence, and why wisdom and alignment matter far more than intensity. If you’ve been exhausted by diets, confusion, and feeling like you’re failing, this episode will encourage you and help you see that your body may not be broken at all—you may simply need the right plan. Longing for peace, clarity, and God’s guidance over your body and wellbeing? In this episode, I’m sharing a powerful prayer for your health, healing, and biblical discernment — so you can invite God into your wellness journey and walk forward with wisdom, peace, and confidence. We’ll focus on renewing your mind and asking the Holy Spirit for wisdom, guidance and discernment in the choices you make around your health. This prayer is based around what I shared in Episode 38, so listen to that also for context.
