Aveilut and Simcha: How Rav Soloveitchik Read Yom Kippur's Hidden Joy, by Rav Yosef Blau Kiyum simcha beYom HaKippurim. No festive meal, no Hallel — so why does Yom Kippur still override mourning like a Yom Tov? Rav Soloveitchik understood aveilut not as a set of external practices but as an inner state — the felt sense of disconnection from Hashem — and understood Yom Tov's simcha similarly, as fundamentally about closeness to Hashem rather than merely festive eating. Because Yom Kippur represents the deepest possible closeness to God (epitomized by the Kohen Gadol entering the Holy of Holies), it cancels aveilut just as other Yamim Tovim do, even without a festive meal — revealing an inner joy beneath its solemnity. This shiur was given in the context of a chug for Bnei Chul at yeshiva: 'Torah and Stories of the Rav' from a close talmid and giant of Jewish education, Rav Yosef Blau. Rav Blau served as the mashgiach ruchani at Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary from 1977 to 2025, before coming on aliya to Israel.

Shabbat Shuva | Teshuva Mei'Yir'a: The Runaway Son, by Rav Eli Weber Why would Chazal choose the "cynical," self-interested model of teshuva for the Shabbat before Yom Kippur? Hoshea 14:2-10, Mikha 7: 18-20, Yoel 2: 15-27 The Haftara of Shabbat Shuva models a modest, even self-interested form of teshuva — returning to God not out of love but out of disappointment that other paths failed — and insists that this lesser teshuva is still fully accepted, the way parents unconditionally welcome home a child who returns only because he has nowhere else to go. Since teshuva mei'ahava (the transformative ideal) is a standard most people can't consistently meet, teshuva mei'yir'a remains a vital, always-available option — one that all of us need, and should choose.

Yeshayahu 60: 1-22 This shiur examines the haftara for Ki Tavo, Yeshayahu's "Kumi Ori" — the sixth of the seven Haftarot of Consolation. It highlights three themes: a metaphysical shift in which Hashem's own light replaces the sun and moon; a historic reversal in which hostile nations come to serve and admire Israel; and deliberate textual parallels between the haftara and the parasha's Tokhacha, closing with reflection on the redemption's timing ("b'ito" versus "achishena").

Ki Tavo | The Power of Mikra Bikkurim and Vidui Ma'asrot, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom The final two Mitzvot in Moshe's presentation of the Law (נאום המצוות) are the "Bikkurim Declaration" and the "Ma'asrot Confession". Immediately after this, the multi-tiered covenant in Moav begins. In earlier shiurim, I have proposed that the נאום המצוות is Moshe's explication, in order, of the עשרת הדברות - and these two recitations are then the explanation and expansion on the last דברות - the prohibition of coveting that which is not ours. Ki Tetze | Roni Akara: Hope That Transforms Present Pain, by Rav Eli Weber Yeshayahu 54: 1-10 The haftara "Roni Akara" consoles Israel not about the pain of the present but about despair over the future. The barren woman symbolizes suffering that seems permanent — and God's promise of children transforms it into bearable hope, an idea echoed in Viktor Frankl's Holocaust observations. To guarantee this promise, God invokes the covenant with Noach: a unilateral oath never breached, proof that the exile will end and His kindness will never depart.

The Special Celebration of טו באב - the Fifteenth of Av, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom The happiest days of the year, Rabban Shim'on b. Gamliel tells us, were the 15th of Av and Yom haKippurim. On these days, he reports, young women would go into the vineyards and dance and the young men would choose them as wives. The Gemara expresses an understandable confusion about the special nature of the 15th of Av, to be compared in its festivity to Yom haKippurim; the Gemara suggests six different things that happened on the 15th of Av during different epochs - but that leaves us all the more confused. What do these six events, none of which is outstanding in its celebration or rejoicing, have in common? We explore these events with an eye to finding the common message and its place in our national ethos. Yirmiyah, the Joyous Sounds of Weddings, and the Return to the Land, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom Why are the themes of marriage and the return to Yerushalayim intertwined in Yirmiyah's prophecies and in the Birkat Chatanim? We are all famliar with the phrase עוד ישמע בערי יהודה ובחוצות ירושלים...from songs, from the final ברכה under the חופה and from countless homilies. Yet, if we look at the original context of these phrases, unique to Yirmiyah, we see that three times the phrase is used to denote what will be lost if the people do not improve their ways. It is only the final mention, in ch. 33, where the voices of gladness of the Chatan and Kalla are restored, as part of the restoration of the People to our Land. We explore the connection between restoration and marriage - and a third component, which appears prominently in a prophecy of Yirmiyah. Matot | Moabite Daughters, a Midianite Princess and Pinchas, by Rav Yitzchak Etshalom Balak-Pinchas-Matot. Why is the "war of vengeance" carried out against Midian, if the instigators and participants in the BaalPeor episode were Moabites? The story of Pinchas's zealotry is famous, yet his action along with the subsequent Divine command to launch a war of נקמה against Midian is surprising, considering that Ba'al Pe'or was (evidently) one of the local Moabite gods and that the seduction began with the daughters of Moab - and that only one Midianite girl was explicitly involved. A discussion of the "sitz im leben", with an eye towards geographic and cultural distinctions between these two nations helps to decipher some of the more cryptic components of this story.
