  1. Episode 661: Your Life Needs More Awe from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 16, 20267 min

Rachel Carson wrote that those who dwell among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life. I have been thinking about that sentence a lot lately. In this episode I explore what awe actually is, drawing on Dacher Keltner's definition: the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your current understanding of the world. And I make the case that awe does not require a mountaintop. It can arrive in an ordinary afternoon, which I illustrate with a deeply personal moment involving old photos of my son and what stopped me cold in that quiet. Keltner's research found that the most common source of awe across cultures is not nature or music but other people's courage, kindness, and overcoming. Awe is everywhere. The question is whether we are moving slowly enough to let it in. Want to keep going? 2. Episode 660: Rest Is Not the Same as Doing Nothing from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 15, 20268 min

Lying on the couch scrolling your phone is inactivity. But it is not rest. In this episode I draw a clear distinction between what restores a human being and what merely passes the time. Genuine rest produces something on the other side: more capacity, quieter mind, a body that has had a chance to repair. Most of what we call rest keeps the nervous system engaged, stimulated, and reacting, which means nothing actually recovers. I share a useful framework for thinking about the different kinds of rest, physical, mental, sensory, and emotional, and why most of us are deficient in at least two or three of them regardless of how many hours we spend on the couch. I also share honestly what actually restores me versus what I used to mistake for restoration. Ready to go deeper? 3. Episode 659: Where Is Your Third Place? from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 14, 20268 min

Sociologist Ray Oldenburg spent his career studying something most of us have never thought to name. He called it the third place. Not home. Not work. The other place. The one where you belong without obligation, where you show up because you want to, where something in you exhales. In this episode I explore Oldenburg's concept and what gets lost when the third place erodes from modern life: not just convenience, but a specific kind of belonging that home and work simply cannot provide. I share my own third places, dance and solo travel, and what makes them function so differently from the rest of my life. And I offer what I think is the most revealing version of the question: not where is your third place now, but what used to be your third place before life got so full? Want everything in one place? 4. Episode 658: You Are Not What You Consume. You Are What You Absorb. from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 13, 20268 min

The more accurate version of "you are what you eat" is this: you are what you absorb. And the same is true of information. In this episode I explore the difference between being smart and being wise, a distinction my husband and I were wrestling with in a recent conversation that I have not been able to stop thinking about. Smart is about intake. Wisdom is what happens when information actually gets processed, integrated, and applied. When it moves from your head into your choices. Most of us have developed very sophisticated consumption habits and very underdeveloped digestion. We move too quickly from one piece of content to the next for anything to settle. What actually allows ideas to digest? Quiet, journaling, real conversation, and the willingness to stay with one thing long enough to find out where it actually lives in your life. 5. Episode 657: Muscle Is More Than a Metabolic Organ from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 12, 20267 min

Somewhere between the bodybuilding world and the wellness world, we lost something important in the conversation about strength. It got reduced to metabolism and body composition. In this episode I make the case that building genuine physical strength does something that calorie math cannot explain: it changes your identity. I share my own experience training with Ido Portal and how that period of physical fortification arrived at the same time as one of the most courageous professional pivots of my life. I do not think that was a coincidence. I also share the emerging research on the connection between muscle mass and cognitive health, including studies showing a significant association between muscle loss and increased risk of Alzheimer's disease. Strength is not a vanity project. It is a long-term investment in how you think, how you function, and how long you hold on to both. Ready to go deeper? 6. Episode 656: Boredom Is Not an Emergency from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 11, 202611 min

We have become so uncomfortable with emptiness that we fill every available moment with something. A podcast, a scroll, a task, a distraction. And in doing so, we have cut ourselves off from something the brain genuinely needs. In this episode I make the case for boredom as a doorway rather than a problem. I share my own experience of extended pausing, seasons of deliberately not forcing the next thing, and what arrives in that spaciousness that the busyness had been drowning out. I also explore the neuroscience of the default mode network, the part of the brain that activates in quiet and is associated with creativity, self-reflection, and processing emotional experience. Boredom, at its best, is a form of receptivity. Life comes to you when you stop sprinting past it. Want everything in one place? 7. Episode 655: When Did Eating Become So Complicated? from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 10, 20268 min

We have taken one of the most basic human activities and turned it into an anxiety-producing intellectual exercise. In this episode I hold a nuanced position: I am not dismissing food tracking, macro counting, or structured eating approaches. For many women, especially those who have been eating in ways that have disconnected them from their body's signals for years, some structure genuinely helps. But there is a version of nutritional complexity that has gone too far, where the rules are so contradictory and the fear of eating the wrong thing so pervasive that eating itself has become a source of chronic stress. I share what simplicity in eating actually looks like in practice: home cooking, fewer ingredients, eating at regular intervals, sitting down at a table, slowing down enough to taste what you are eating. And I make the case that the energy and attention you bring to how you eat matters as much as what you eat. Want to keep going? 8. Episode 654: Your Attention Is Part of Your Health from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 9, 20268 min

Most of us think carefully about what we put in our bodies. Very few of us think with equal intentionality about what we put in our minds. In this episode I make the case that your attention is a health variable. What it lands on, repeatedly, becomes the environment your nervous system lives in. And that environment is either building your capacity or quietly eroding it. I share the filter I personally use when I notice I am feeling overwhelmed: what have I been consuming? Because so often the anxiety is not about my life. It is about the inputs I have been absorbing. Alarming news, outrage-based content, comparison-provoking social media, these things do not just feel bad. They train the nervous system to operate in a state of low-level threat response. You have far more agency over this than you might think. And exercising it is one of the most health-promoting things available to you. Ready to go deeper? 9. Episode 653: Who Can You Call at 2 A.M.? from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 8, 20268 min

You can be in a room of ten thousand people and feel completely alone. If no one there actually knows you, the numbers mean nothing. In this episode I explore the difference between being connected and being truly known, and why that distinction may be the most important relational one of your life. I share my own honest reckoning with the limits of surface connection and my growing craving for real depth in my relational world, the kind that does not happen in a comment section or a DM. I also offer what I think is the most clarifying question available: if something happened at 2 in the morning, who would you call? Not text. Call. Knowing they would pick up, show up, and hold what you are carrying. If a name came to mind immediately, hold that relationship with both hands. If the question gave you pause, that is information worth sitting with. Want everything in one place? 10. Episode 652: The Case for Morning Light from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 7, 20266 min

This is not a biohacking episode. I am not going to tell you to buy a special lamp or track your lux levels. I just want to make the case for something so simple and so free that we have almost entirely stopped doing it: going outside in the morning and letting daylight reach your eyes. In this episode I share how my nine-month-old Great Dane Tilly accidentally became my most reliable wellness accountability partner, the research on what morning light actually does to your circadian system, cortisol, melatonin, and sleep quality, and the problem with spending most of our waking hours under artificial junk light. Getting outside in the morning, before the screen, before the to-do list takes over, is one of the simplest and most impactful things available to you. Your biology is still remarkably responsive to something as basic as daylight. Let it do its job. Want to keep going? 11. Episode 651: What If Fun Is a Health Metric? from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 6, 20267 min

What if we tracked laughter and play and genuine enjoyment with even a fraction of the enthusiasm we bring to our step counts and protein grams? In this episode I make the case that fun is not frivolous. It is a sustainability mechanism. And in a long-term health practice, sustainability is everything. I explore the concept of bringing magic to the mundane: what happens when you approach cooking with presence and music instead of efficiency, when you consider the route of your walk or who you move with or the playlist that actually makes you want to move. These are not small things. They are the difference between a practice you sustain and one you eventually abandon. I also offer a simple honest audit: where in your health practice right now are you experiencing genuine dread? Because dread is information. And it is not a sustainable fuel. Ready to go deeper? 12. Episode 650: Your Body Loves a Rhythm from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 5, 20268 min

Your body is not asking for a perfect schedule. It is asking for predictability. In this episode I explore how the body's circadian rhythm, the internal clock regulating nearly every physiological process, is set and sustained by consistent external cues: light, meal timing, movement, sleep windows. When those cues are reliable, the body can do its work efficiently. When they are scattered, the system has to constantly recalibrate, and that costs energy. I also share one of the most concrete illustrations I know of how trainable the body actually is: the metabolism. Women who consistently delay their first meal stop feeling hungry in the morning. Women who shift to eating within an hour of waking become ravenously hungry at that time within weeks. The body adapts to what you give it consistently. That responsiveness is one of the most underappreciated tools available to you. Want everything in one place? 13. Episode 649: Do You Have Enough to Look Forward To? from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 4, 20268 min

My husband and I were talking recently about how full and heavy midlife feels right now. The parents to care for, the teenager still at home, the business to run, the relationship to tend. And underneath that conversation was something surprising: the weight of it is also what keeps us going. In this episode I make the case that having something to look forward to is not a luxury. It is a health variable. Anticipation activates the brain's dopamine system in ways that genuinely support mood, motivation, and engagement with life. When nothing is on the horizon, life starts to feel flat in a way that is not just emotional. It is physiological. I also explore a pattern I see repeatedly in coaching: people who retire and discover that having nothing they have to do turns out to be its own kind of problem. The weight of obligation and the aliveness it produces are more connected than most of us realize. Want to keep going? 14. Episode 648: The Health Cost of Being in a Hurry from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 3, 202611 min

You can eat well, exercise consistently, and sleep seven hours a night. And still spend your entire day physiologically rushing. In this episode I make the case that chronic hurry has a real and measurable health cost that most of us are completely underestimating. When the nervous system is in a constant low-grade state of urgency, it affects digestion, immune function, sleep quality, cognitive performance, and the ability to feel present in your own life. I also explore what I think is the deeper cost of hurry: the life we miss while moving too fast to experience it. The conversations that deserved more presence. The meals that became things to get through. The moments that passed without ever actually landing. Slowing down is not laziness. It is a physiological necessity and a prerequisite for a life that actually feels like yours. Ready to go deeper? 15. Episode 647: Your Social Life Might Need Progressive Overload from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 2, 20268 min

In strength training, if you never increase the challenge, you stop getting stronger. The body adapts and then plateaus. The same thing happens in your social life. In this episode I take one of the foundational principles of physical training and apply it to relational health, because a lot of us have been lifting the same relational weight for years. Same people, same conversations, same comfortable equilibrium. And then we wonder why our social lives feel flat or unfulfilling. I explore what relational complacency actually looks like, why it is so easy to settle into it, and what progressive overload actually means when applied to connection: finding new circles, having the challenging conversation, approaching existing relationships with more honesty and curiosity than comfort. 16. Episode 646: Boring Works from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Sep 1, 202613 min

After thirty years in the wellness industry and hundreds of conversations with extraordinary health experts, I keep arriving at the same conclusion. Not a revolutionary one. A remarkably unsexy one. The basics work. In this episode I share the turning point in my own life that proved this to me beyond any doubt, including my experience with a program called Genesis Transformation, where I watched women deep in perimenopause transform their bodies by doing nothing more exotic than drinking water, strength training, sleeping, eating enough protein, and parenting their brains. What I also share is the framework I have built my entire coaching career around, the Five to Thrive, plus the two additions I would make today: community and time in nature. The breakthrough you are looking for is probably not a new protocol. It is probably a deeper and more consistent relationship with what you already know works. Want to keep going? 17. Episode 645: The Envy You Are Not Admitting To from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Aug 31, 20266 min

There is a feeling most of us were taught to be ashamed of. We call it a sin. We hide it. We dress it up as something more acceptable. But what if envy, honestly examined, is actually one of the most useful signals available to you? In this episode I draw the distinction between jealousy, which makes me feel small and defensive, and envy, which points at something I desire. I share my own experience following Misty Tripoli, the founder of the Groove dance movement, and how sitting with what I envy about her revealed something important about what I want for myself. Envy, properly examined, is not a character flaw. It is a compass. And it is worth following. Want everything in one place? 18. Episode 644: Alone but Not Lonely from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Aug 30, 20267 min

I have been alone but not lonely. And I have been surrounded by people and felt profoundly alone. Those are two completely different experiences. And understanding the difference between them might change how you relate to both. In this episode I draw a clear distinction between solitude and loneliness, share my own deep craving for solitude and the permission it took to finally pursue it without guilt, and explore why the loneliness I see most often in the women I work with is not the loneliness of physical isolation. It is the loneliness of not feeling truly known. That kind of loneliness is not solved by more time with people. It is solved by deeper connection, starting with yourself. Want to keep going? 19. Episode 643: The Art of Receiving from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Aug 29, 20267 min

I am very good at giving. I spent a long time being terrible at receiving. And I have come to understand that the inability to receive is not humility. It is a wall. And it keeps love out just as effectively as it keeps pain out. In this episode I share the story of my friend Colleen volunteering at my first retreat and what happened when I finally said yes to being supported. What I discovered completely reframed how I think about receiving. When I refuse it, I am not protecting anyone. I am denying the people who care about me the opportunity to love me. And I am denying myself the experience of being loved. I also name the three things that typically sit underneath the inability to receive: vulnerability, worth, and control. And I offer a simple practice for beginning to let care in. Ready to go deeper? 20. Episode 642: The Inner Critic at Midlife from Grace & Grit Podcast, opens in a new tab

    Aug 28, 20268 min

There is a voice that most of us know intimately. The one that says you are not doing enough, not being enough, not achieving enough. At midlife, that voice often gets louder. In this episode I share my own evolving relationship with my inner critic, including how I have learned to stop trying to silence her and start turning her questions back around. When she asks why I am not doing more, I have learned to answer: why not me? Why not this version, this season, doing things the way I am doing them? I also explore the reframe that has helped me most, treating the inner critic not as an enemy but as information, and share research on why self-compassion actually outperforms self-criticism when it comes to motivation, resilience, and performance.
